Over the past several weeks, we have made substantive revisions to four battle pages related to events along the North Branch Potomac River in the Upper Potomac region in June and July 1861. Most of these were among the first additions to our site back in 2021 and were sorely in need of updating.
First and foremost, you’ll notice a name change. This is to remain consistent with our naming conventions and maximum historical accuracy:
- “Engagement at Romney” is now “Skirmish at Romney”
- “Action at New Creek” is now “Action at Bridge No. 21”
- “Skirmish at Frankfort and Patterson’s Creek” is now “Skirmishes at Dan’s Run and Kelley’s Island”
- “Skirmish at New Creek” is now “Skirmishes at New Creek and Piedmont”
We greatly expanded each battle narrative to reflect months of painstaking research and added a wealth of new sources, including Mark and Fritz Haselberger’s hard to find series published in the West Virginia History journal in the 1960s.
