The Battle of Belington / Laurel Hill was fought from Sunday, July 7 to Thursday, July 11, 1861 between Union forces commanded by Brig. Gen. Thomas A. Morris and Confederate forces commanded by Brig. Gen. Robert S. Garnett in what is today Barbour County, West Virginia. It involved around 8,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.
Over the past several years, we have published several posts on this battle. I have focused in particular on identifying landmarks, orienting eyewitness accounts, and reconstructing an accurate map of the terrain and troop dispositions. To my knowledge, no detailed map of the battle exists. One map of the Laurel Hill fortifications was drawn by a Union spy, and a rough sketch appeared in the Cincinnati Daily Commercial on July 18, 1861.
