9th Ohio Infantry Regiment

This organization was composed of Patriotic German Americans of the City of Cincinnati, who responded promptly to the President’s call for 75,000 troops for three months. The ten companies composing this Regiment were enrolled April 22, 1861, and mustered into the United States Service May 8, 1861, at Camp Harrison, near Cincinnati, Ohio, by Gordon Granger, Captain U. S. A. On May 18th the Regiment was ordered to Camp Dennison, Ohio, a few miles distant, to be equipped and prepared for active service. Here they learned of the President’s call for Volunteers to serve three years, when immediately nearly the entire membership agreed to enlist for that period, the enrolling of which took place May 27, 1861, it being the first three years’ organization from the State of Ohio.
