BLUF: All 36 battle pages have undergone comprehensive structural updates to improve readability and organization. These enhancements include a table of contents and a standardized layout across all pages.
Over the past few weeks, we have been steadily updating all 36 battle pages in this encyclopedia. You may have already noticed some of these changes, which are designed to ensure a consistent reading experience and present key details in a clear, easy-to-read format. Battle pages are now organized into the following format:
- Cover image (when available)
- Name
- Date
- Summary
- Image gallery (when available)
- Table of contents
- Battle narrative
- Order of battle
- Timeline
- Modern battlefield description
- Modern battlefield location and area map
- Primary sources
- Secondary sources
- Dates page created and updated
- Comments
Twenty-two pages now feature photos of their modern-day battlefields, showcasing prominent geography, signage, and historical markers. As the curator of this encyclopedia, I believe visiting these locations is essential—studying the terrain, observing the details, and envisioning the past. While much has changed over the decades, particularly in Virginia, sharing these photos allows you to appreciate the unique physical characteristics of each site.
Take a look at the new format in the infographic below. In the coming months, we will be working to fill in missing information on our battle pages while also making long overdue revisions and expansions to battle narratives.
